Is anyone having trouble with their BT phone lines? i hear a load of people have been left without a phone. I'm doing a bit for the croydon advertiser because it's not on that noone's fixing the problem. If you have, give me a call 8760 7608 or email anna.edwards@essnmedia.co.uk

My line (020 8651) went down on Sunday (9th Aug) at around 1230hrs.
Had to use my mobile to report it to my service provider (Tiscali leasing line from BT). After 15 minutes talking to someone at a call centre outside the UK, who only wanted to go through their crib sheet of unplug the filters, disconnect the Sky box etc etc. Finally got them to accepted that as I didn't have a dial tone there was probably a fault on the line or at the exchange (even though my first question to them was... were BT doing any work at the exchange?) only then to be told that engineers don't work on a Sunday (really, since when has a BT engineer turned down a chance of overtime. Probably was just an excuse for Tiscali not to pick up the tab if it turned out to be a fault on their side) and it would have to be dealt with on Monday.
Although I was promised an update call back on my mobile on the Monday nothing materialised; however I'm pleased to report that the problem, whatever it was, had been rectified by the time I had returned from work on Monday evening.
I'm still waiting, but not holding my breath, for Tiscali to confirm what actual went wrong. The last contact I had from them was by e-mail at around 2100hrs on Sunday night (how you are expected pick up e-mails without an active phone/ADSL line or e-mail enabled mobile is anyone's guess. I only saw this on Monday evening when I could finally download my mails), which advised that an incident number had been raised and they'd be back in touch once the problem had been resolved.
Having spoken to a number of friends on Forestdale I've found out that I wasn't an isolated case and the problem seemed to have hit 020 8651 and 020 8657 numbers but no one had been given a reason what had happened.

I did notice on monday evening there were 4 or 5 BT vans parked along the main addington road near the school, where they all seemed to be working. i'm not sure if this is connected in anyway to forestdale phone lines going down.

Croydon Advertiser said it was attempted cable theft. They must be pretty desperate (or thick) to go for telephone wire ....

My upstairs neighbour and I also had problems over what was probably that same weekend. It got sorted a few days later, but we had to log separate calls with BT and they treated them as separate incidents.
Telephone cable and electric cable are a favourite of thieves for their resale value.
