I have today contacted the Council in a bid to secure investment for Courtwood Playground, which is a disgrace and a sorry sight - graffiti-ridden, outdated unusable equipment etc etc. I urge as many parents as possible to do the same and to ask local councillors for their help. Hundreds of kids live on the estate and in the 11 years I have been here, nothing has been done (cf. Selsdon Rec playground and numeorus other sites with spanking new equipment etc). Forestdale residents and children get a rotten deal in most things. This is no different.

To throw your weight behind this campaign to secure funds for an improved playground, please e-mail the council at the following: Julie.Christie@croydon.gov.uk
Our local councillors have nominated Courwtood for investment - so the more we all badger the Council, the better.
I went up to the playground with my kids yesterday and it was unusable and depressing.

On Thursday I hear a petition signed by hundreds of local children, parents and teachers was handed in to the council in a bid to secure a grant to improve Courtwood Playground. It will be included with the official application for the Playbuilders grant. Let's hope it will be successful. And well done to everyone!

Hi, I'm a reporter on the Croydon Advertiser. Having read some of the comments on the site I would definitely be interested in covering your efforts in trying to get the playground some much needed investment. If anyone would be willing to talk about it please give me a ring on 020 8760 7617. Cheers.

Gareth. I organised a petition signed by the children and teachers of Courtwood School, the headmaster at Forestdale School, various youth groups and parents etc. I presented this to the council and a grant has been recommended, but needs to be ratified now in April. This is a copy of Ms Winterman's message to me from the council:
I’ve had confirmation that Courtwood Playground has been recommended for a Playbuilder grant to be spent between April 2009 & March 2010. The recommendation has to go to Council Cabinet on 16th March and 5 days after this all Cabinet decisions can be called in for scrutiny, so we will know definitely on Monday 23 March. Assuming the report doesn’t get pulled in for scrutiny we can start consulting the young people of Forestdale about new play facilities in April. If we need planning permission for the project it probably won’t be installed until the autumn half term but if we don’t, it should be late summer.
Thank you for all your help, having the petition signed by all the children certainly helped when I had to present the application to the panel last week.

GOOD NEWS! The Council have been awarded a grant of £50,000 to refurbish the playground at Courtwood. Thank you to Mary Ann Winterman at Croydon Council, to the children and heads of Courwood and Forestdale Primary Schools and to the Forestdale Salvation Army for all their support and for getting involved with petitions. The funding has to be spent by April 2010 but that should give us time to talk to local children, develop a design brief and tender the project.
Well done and thanks to all!

A notice has gone up at the playground entrance that it will be closed for about 8 weeks from Thursday 8 April for refurbishment. Not quite the March completion we were promised in the last Link magazine but nonetheless good news. Does anyone know what the new playground will look like?

Saw some workers in the park over the weekend and they said that they'd be finished by the end of next week.
